We recommended 8 European Parliament constituencies for Scotland in our Report in 1978. They were used in elections to the European Assembly (as it was then known) in 1979. These European constituencies were defined as collections of the UK Parliament constituencies in use in 1978, as defined in our Second Periodical Report of 1969 and revised by our Interim Report of 1972.

We recommended 8 European Parliament constituencies for Scotland in our Report in 1984. They were used in elections to the European Parliament in 1984, 1989 and 1994. These European constituencies were defined as collections of the UK Parliament constituencies in use in 1984, as defined in our Third Periodical Report of 1983. They were amended in 1989 and 1991 to reflect changes to the underlying UK Parliament constituencies.

We completed our Second Supplementary Report on the European Parliamentary Constituencies in 1996 for use in elections in 1999. However before those elections took place, the electoral system in the UK for the European Parliament was changed by the European Parliamentary Elections Act 1999. From 1999 until 2020 Scotland formed a single electoral region for European Parliament elections returning a number of Members of the European Parliament using a regional list system.
